With its central plaza (Plaza de la Independencia) at an elevation of 2,850 meters about 9.000 feet, Quito is the second highest capital in the world, after La Paz in Bolivia. High mountains, including an active volcano (Pichincha) loom around the city.

Quito is not the largest city in Ecuador, Guayaquil is, with a tremendous infraestructure of hotels and places to visit Guayaquil offers a great tourist opportunity however for many tourists, Quito offers nice mountain, spring weather all year around and it also has a main transport hub ( because of its airport), so you might spend some time here as well as Guayaquil.

Some travelers consider it a very relaxing place and the best place in South America for studying Spanish.

The old town of Quito (called locally ‘El Centro’ and, in publications, ‘Centro Histórico’ or ‘Quito Colonial’) is really special and should not be missed. It is full with museums, churches and other sights. It is also an area full of life. Lots of small shops and eateries make it pleasant to stroll around. Quito new attraction ‘Teleferico’ is now open this Cable car takes you all the way up to see Quito’s surrounding and the great valleys with Snow covered volcanoes near by, take a nice cam with you and be ready to take hundred of pictures.

South west of Quito, is a new tourist destination call “Guayaquil” this Port is Ecuador’s largest city with beautiful parks, places to go, eat and shop. Guayaquil known as the Pacific Pearl had been going through a tremendous renewal process, this face lift that this city had done for the past 12 years has open new Tourist opportunity for the wide and its beautiful harbor, unique in Latin American, this harbor was design for the Oxford University of London and an investment of over USD/. 800 million dollars was taking place and now is on the Top 10 hot spots to see and enjoy.

The restaurant feels very Spanish colonial, with thick white-stucco walls, red carpeting, sloped wood ceilings, brick archways, dark-wood high-back chairs, and iron chandeliers. Tour buses bring hordes of diners nightly; indeed, very few locals come here. If you’re looking to mingle with Quiteños, I suggest you skip this place and head to El Nispero or La Querencia.

That said, the food here is excellent, and the service professional. Highlights of the high-quality Ecuadorian cuisine include langostinos del Pacífico (Pacific jumbo shrimp in garlic or tarragon sauce); brocheta mixta con lomo, pollo, y chancho (grilled kabob with beef, chicken, and pork); and perníl con llapingachos, mole, salsa de maní, y aguacate (roasted leg of pork with mashed potatoes and cheese in a peanut sauce with avocados). For appetizers, I recommend the ceviche, chicken tamales, and famous Ecuadorian soup, locro de papas con queso y aguacate (creamy potato soup with cheese and avocado). On weekends they usually have live folkloric dance and music performances.

This dimly lit restaurant with a distinctly medieval feel is the best — and most expensive — place in Quito to enjoy fresh seafood. Specialties of the house include bouillabaisse, paella, and other seafood stews. Arroz del capitán (rice, prawns, mussels, clams, squid, octopus, and any other fresh seafood available that day mixed with coriander, soy sauce, and onions) is the only Ecuadorian dish on the menu. But the coconut shellfish is prepared with local tropical flavors.

Also available are Chilean mussels, lobster, and calamari. The sea bass in a butter-and-garlic sauce is succulent. Whatever you order, you probably won’t be disappointed — the chef has a knack for throwing together different flavors from the sea. And you certainly won’t leave hungry, as portions are substantial. There are three separate dining rooms; I always try to get a seat within view, but not too close, to the fireplace in the principal dining room.

Plus, this place serves the best ceviche in Quito. You can order any type of ceviche, from clams to octopus to fish or shrimp. The chefs here also do an excellent job with all sorts of seafood.

One of the specialties is the gran mariscada, an enormous, beautiful platter of assorted sizzling seafood. The arroz con mariscos (yellow rice with peppers, onions, mussels, clams, shrimp, calamari, octopus, and crayfish) is also delicious. Even though Las Redes is on one of the busiest streets of Quito, the simple wood tables and fishnets hanging from the ceilings make you feel as though you are at a local seafood joint on the coast.

Semi-formal and almost always packed, this longstanding option is one of the top Italian restaurants in town. The menu is dauntingly long and covers the cuisines from all regions of Italy — I like coming with a group so I can taste a wide range of the choices. The heart and soul of the menu is a range of pastas and risi. Everything is very well done. I like the risotto salmone e rucola (salmon and arugula) and the house penne, which comes in a thick tomato sauce with eggplant, capers, anchovies, and both green and black olives.

For something more exotic, you can try a risotto with frog’s legs. More substantial entrees include captretto alla messinese, a goat dish cooked with tomatoes, rosemary, and potatoes, as well as veal Bolognese. There’s an antipasti buffet ($8/£4.40 small; $14/£7.70 large), which is quite inviting, and a less-outstanding dessert buffet ($4.50/£2.50). The wine list is long, but much heavier on Chilean and Argentine offerings than on those from Italy. Try to grab a window table in the main dining room, which features wood floors and a few Tiffany-style lamps. There’s a cozy but viewless dining room below the main room, which is used for overflow.
